Frost's Descent: A Greeting to Winter
Frost's Descent is the 18th term of 24 traditional Chinese solar terms and the last one of autumn, which begins this year on Oct. 23 and ends on Nov. 7. During this period, the weather becomes much colder than before and frost begins to appear.
Usually, it's time to put on warm clothes and eat nutritious foods such as persimmons, chestnuts and duck to store energy for the coming winter.
Besides, there are interesting festivals in this term. Frost's Descent Festival celebrated by the Zhuang people (one of Chinese 56 ethnic groups) is the representative one. It is held every year on the first day of Frost's Descent. In this festival, the Zhuang people offer sacrifices, dances and singing folk songs to commemorate Cen Yuyin, a heroine in battles against foreign aggression. In 2014, this splendid festival was included in the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists.
