Editor's Note

On December 11th, the 2022 "FLTRP·ETIC Cup" National English Public Speaking Contest came to an end. Nine finalists from all over the country delivered English speeches focusing on the theme of the Grand Course which has gone down as a millennia-old dream of the Chinese nation. Wu Liting, from the School of Foreign Languages, won the fourth place in the contest, which broke the record of CCNU!

As a normal university student, Wu Liting took "Learning and Educating" as her topic, which displayed the characteristics of CCNU, to speak out the contribution of education to the pursuit of the Grand Course. Through her profound content and tenacity, she got high grades and won the fourth position in such a competitive contest.

Wu Liting owns various shining identities: an excellent student gaining countless prizes in different contests, an outstanding member of English Press Corps (EPC) of the CCNU Media Convergence Center, as well as the team leader of the English Interpretation Team of the School History Museum. However, on the competition stage, she is born for public speaking. The distinctive charm of public speaking presented by her touched all the audiences!

When asked how to maintain a stable mentality in such a competitive arena, she replied, "I can feel every step I took, and I think they’re meaningful. I was not that thirsty for a good place when I was racing and comforted myself with a contented mind." Moreover, "courageous", "curious", "diligent" are the words Wu used to summarize her current state of life. "Courage enables me to set sail, and curiosity does me a favor to bring more surprises to captivate my audience. On the basis of courage and curiosity, I must be diligent to persevere to the end. The harder you work, the luckier you would be", she said.

But the road to success is always bumpy. Actually, in the provincial competition stage, Wu Liting suffered a serious blow and almost missed the chance to reach the finals. Discouraged and depressed, she cried bitterly in the cold wind for a while, but ultimately, she told herself never ever deny yourself for one or two failures. Furthermore, the encouragement and support from her teachers and teammates delighted her. Finally, with great grit, she reached the finals through the Internet contest course. "It is our consistent line of thought to focus on the process rather than the outcome, and it's also this mentality that keeps us here," she said.

Rome was not built in a day. According to Wu Liting, she has delivered at least 100 speeches after entering CCNU. In addition to public speaking contests, as a member of the CCNU English Public Speaking Team, she has been giving a speech once a week for nearly two years. "It's not a burden. I really enjoy the spark brought by the collision of souls when giving a speech," she added.

When talking about the English Public Speaking Team, she regards it as a big family where she can feel great warmth and absorb spiritual nutrients. "It is the Team that enables me to feel the great charm of public speaking and opens a new door for my college life," she said. She also emphasized that the good result of this contest is not just achieved by her own efforts but the efforts of the whole team and their deep love for public speaking.

Ultimately, Wu shared her experience with us, "Explore more and find what you love. The sooner you find it, the better. After that, you must work hard and do it with enthusiasm, and finally you will be able to reap the rewards. Just find your voice and explore your potential when you're young!"
