Ph.D. Positions (Water Treatment and Desalination)
I remember my doctoral advisor once said (and I rephrase) that “You will graduate when you can teach me something new and exciting”. My postdoctoral advisor recently shared in a WeChat group a Jewish quote from the Talmud, that “I have learned much from my teachers, more from my colleagues, and the most from my students.”  I am always looking for bright students who can teach me new things and work with me on exciting topics. I have the privilege to have had worked with such students, and am again seeking students of the kind currently (details given below):
The Lin Research Group at Vanderbilt University is seeking two Ph.D. students for Fall 2020 (or Spring 2020 if at all possible) to work on water treatment and desalination. Ideal candidates should be strongly self-motivated and have a background from environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or material science. Research experience with, and a strong interest in, both experimental and modeling work, are highly preferred. The student can choose to apply through either the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, or the  Material Science Program.
The Lin Research Group (http://www.shihonglin.net) is primarily interested in advancing water treatment and desalination via enhancing our fundamental understanding, developing novel materials, and performing model-based optimization. The specific technical processes we have worked oninclude but are not limited to, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, capacitive deionization, and membrane distillation. We are also interested in fundamental interfacial phenomena with environmental relevance. We use both experimental and theoretical approaches to investigate a variety of topics, including energy efficiency of desalination, transport of ions and molecules in nano-confinement, and performance-oriented design of new materials and treatment processes. You can learn more about our work by looking at our publications:http://www.shihonglin.net/publications.html

Lin Research Group (2018 Summer)

Interested applicants should visit our web-page and contact Dr. Lin via email (shihong.lin@vanderbilt.edu) with a brief statementof research interest and career goal. Please also attach a CV and unofficial copies of transcript and GRE/TOEFL test scores if available/applicable.Successful applicants should have earned a B.S. or M.S degree upon matriculation. All Ph.D. students will receive full financial aid, including tuition, a competitive stipend, and other benefits. The departmental deadline for application is Dec 1. 2019 for Fall 2020 enrollment.
