MIND: How Redefining Your Normal Can Change Your Life in 2019
By Rebecca A.
A few years ago my husband introduced me to the notion of ‘redefining normal’. He was using it in reference to fitness, when we were discussing people for whom 200 press-ups or 30 chin-ups or running 15km a day was normal. I had been giving excuses as to why I wasn’t doing that – ‘I am normal, what they are doing is not normal’ – until his simple statement radically shifted the way I saw life. Their life was their normal, and could just as easily be 'my normal', if I only changed my thinking.
My mission for 2019 is to ‘redefine my normal’. In order to become our best selves, thriving and living in harmony with ourselves, others and the earth, we need to redefine our normal in everything we do. We can hide behind our ‘normal’ selves, making excuses for why we haven’t achieved as much, why we aren’t more fit, why we can’t lose weight, why we haven’t reached our savings goals, or whatever other habit that we have that is stopping us reach our potential.
Or, we can redefine our normal. For me, this is far more powerful than setting New Year Resolutions. ‘Redefining normal’ isn’t just about setting goals, it’s about having a radical new mind shift, it’s creating new thinking patterns and seeing yourself in a different light.
Whether it is personal fitness goals for yourself (let daily exercise become your ‘normal’), committing to a sugar-free or vegetarian diet for health and environmental reasons (saying no to meat and sugar can become your ‘normal’), stopping the frivolous spending (sticking to your budget can become your 'normal'), committing to a Zero Waste lifestyle (saying ‘no’ to single use plastics can become your ‘normal’), stopping negative self-talk (speaking positive affirmations can be your 'normal'), you can redefine your normal this year.
I’ve been experimenting with various challenges over the last few years, fitness, dietary, Zero Waste and shopping, and the challenges that I have been the most successful with are the ones where I have stuck with the challenge the longest, was consistently reading inspiring content, and talking to people on similar paths, and more importantly, changed my thinking so these things were no longer a ‘challenge’ but a normal way of thinking.
This year, the Well Collective of coaches, counsellors, advocates and other inspiring women, will share with you content to help you redefine your normal. We are on a journey of discoveries for living our best lives, while being open and honest about the challenges and hardships. Throughout the year we will bring you free online workshops, provide you with accountability challenges and support groups, and try and create discussions about how we can make the world a better place, starting with us.
Well Women are village women. We gather together as in the old days, around a virtual village well of water, to talk, to share, to inspire and connect.
Join us on our journey to Live Well, Love Well and Be Well.
