WELL STYLE: What to Wear When Working From Home

By Hannah Northcott

All dressed up and nowhere to go?

Perhaps we’d think that to be a sad state of affairs, but when so many of us are working from home, why not have a little fun with our wardrobe?

After weeks of wearing PJ’s, work-out clothes and lounge wear, let’s see if pumping up the style meter can boost the mood during quarantine season and see if what we wear truly affects how we  feel.

My two daughters - ages eight and five – have no problem dressing-up every day. They even parade in my high heels during their occasional fashion shows.

So if my daughters can wear dresses to breakfast, maybe it’s time for mommy to step-up her game. May be I’ll even put on a little make-up to cover-up for the unwashed hair.

The mom bun is here to stay because the last time I checked, the salons offering blow outs and head massages were still closed and I have no patience for a hair dryer. A cute outfit plus minimal make-up will just have to do; that’s the rule of two and it’s good enough.

If you'd like to look polished even when the only person seeing you is the one in the mirror, focus on two things:

·     Outfit + make-up (bun or ponytail)

·     Outfit + hair (minimal make-up)

·     Hair and make-up (minimalist outfit)

·     Nail polish + hair (minimal outfit and make-up)

Putting effort into two of the things listed above is already a leap out of our pajamas. You don’t believe me? Try this.

Imagine you’re in your pajamas but have an amazing hairstyle and beautiful nail polish; doesn’t it already make you smile?

Let’s play with five outfit themes and be creative with our closets.

FIVE THEMES TO WEAR WHEN YOU WORK FROM HOME

(no purchase necessary)

1.    Island Fun

Tropical Pants/Skirt + Neutral Top + Fun Accessory

It’s hard enough to be quarantined. Add the recent pollution and we all just wish we joined the mass exodus to Thailand. But since we can’t go to the tropics, bring the island vibe to your hive. Since we’re not really going outside then we don’t even have to worry about being “out of season".

2.    Jersey Girl

Jersey Piece of Clothing + Long Necklace

Jersey is a soft and cozy fabric. Coco Chanel revolutionized fashion with this fabric to make women’s clothes more comfortable.

Check out your closet for clothes that has some jersey in them – perhaps a dress, skirt, or a jumpsuit and jazz it up with statement necklace or a cozy cardigan.

3.    Color Therapy

Color makes people happy. It’s proven! What color makes you smile? Wear it.

Wanna go crazier? Color block and mix complimentary or jewel hues together or experiment with a monochromatic outfit combining colors from the same family.

If your closet is mostly neutral, create a monochromatic outfit mixing your beige, blacks or brown – a classic combo will also give a sense of classic elegance.

4.    Sparkle and Shine

Having a rough day? Throw on some sparkle! Whoever invented sequins and glitter knew this trick.

 5.    50/50

Polished Top + comfortable bottoms (sweats, joggers, jeans or leggings)

It’s the outfit equivalent of a mohawk. Professional on top and party at the bottom. A great outfit for zoom calls where students or clients see your face but still comfortable enough to play 'mommy' after to chase your kids around.

This is a great outfit to wear when batch-filming your instructional videos for your students because wearing color near your face will draw the attention to it.

Fun-uary doesn’t just have to be for kids. We can do it for ourselves too! Give it a try. Go to your closet, create an outfit and share it to the ladies at Well I Beijing Style Circle…after all, we dress for ourselves and other ladies.
