Our WellWomen community has done a lot of reflecting on our situation over the last couple of months, and one of the key concepts that keeps coming up over and over is the concept of finding beauty, magic and wonder in the everyday moments.
We can find joy in standing in a sunny window sipping our first mug of coffee and feeling the warm sunlight hitting our faces; we can find joy as we stand blissfully under the hot shower, experiencing the caress of the hot water flooding over us; we can find joy as we slip into a nicely made bed at the end of the day; or when we melt into the hugs of our loved ones.
Check out our suggestions below which will help bring a positive vibe to your home, making your days seem less mundane as you begin to let yourself fall into simple pleasures.
Candles
There is something transcendent about candles - the way the flame flickers, slow and steady. The gentle, mesmerizing qualities of candles lend themselves to an atmosphere of pure relaxation. They are a powerful way to change the vibe of a space, and studies show they have a positive impact on mood, especially scented candles and oils.
To change up the energy in your home, or when you feel like you are losing yourself among chores and the to-do lists, fire up a scented candle for a multi-sensorial experience. The team at WellWomen highly recommend Powerful Human Candles produced by Beijing-expat Cami Pipkin. These candle scents are freaking divine, and the gorgeous smells are transcendent. (I may or may not spend extraordinarily long periods of time sniffing at the samples at Roundabout every time I go there just to get a hit - ‘orgasmic’ is a word I’ve heard to describe the citrus flavour).
In our home we’ve started burning tall candles at our dinner table a lot more - the kids love the ‘special’ atmosphere they create. But you don’t need to wait until night time or a special occasion to use scented candles - that moment is now.

Music
Cue up your favourite playlist or discover some fabulous new tunes to bring a sophisticated, lounge vibe to your home and you’ll start cruising along over that unending sea of laundry, unswept floors, dishes and children.
Choose a relaxed, upbeat playlist for your mornings to help put everyone in a good mood ready to tackle the day, and switch it up in the afternoon to bring in the mood you want to create in your home. Tune into your emotions and those of your children and choose a playlist accordingly.
Evenings are for winding down, reading books, reflecting on your day, or building an intimate connection with your partner through good conversation or maybe even a slow dance, so choose a playlist or genre that will create a chill atmosphere.
If you don’t already have your own playlists, I strongly suggest trialing Spotify – you can search by genre and mood so that you can get the perfect vibe to design the life
Facial
Treat yourself to a mini-facial at home using this simple method:
1. Clean your skin as usual. Wet a hand towel in warm water. Put warm water in a pot and add a few drops of essential oil (such as lavender), disperse the oil and then wet the towel in the pot.
2. Eliminate the excess water. The towel should be warm, not hot; if it is too hot, then wait until the temperature lowers.
3. Lie down, put the towel on your face and breathe deeply. Relax and leave it until it becomes almost cold.
4. Put the towel back in warm water.
5. Now apply a mask (try oatmeal flakes, a little honey and natural yoghurt) and lie down again. Leave the mask on for about 10 to 15 minutes.
6. Take off the mask with warm water and then use the towel to clean the skin.
7. If you are using toner or rose water, pat gently on the skin.
8. Apply your moisturizer and eye cream, if you use them.
More than one WellWomen in our village has shared that one of their favourite moments of self-care is in the evening when using The Green Room Face Balm as their cleanser to wash away the impurities and stress of the day, and after two years of using their products, I have to agree.
The Green Room skincare range, made from organic botanical oils, was developed by long-term Beijing-expats Astra Holmes and Jess Meider in response to the Beijing-air which causes havoc on skin. Every night using the face balm can be a mini-facial in itself – simple apply the face balm oil to you face using gentle circular moments, heat up a washcloth with hot water and hold it up to your face inhaling the luxurious scent before wiping away the oil. Use your favourite Green Room serum oil afterwards to experience brighter, plumper, more healthy skin.
* The Green Room are offering our WellWomen community a 12% discount of any products ordered before 01 May, 2020, which you can order by scanning the below QR code to access their online store.
