Zhang Peili, born in Hangzhou, 1957, lives and works between Shanghai and Hangzhou




《油罐》这件水彩作品由张培力在进入浙江美术学院(即现在的中国美术学院)就读期间,即1982-1983年间创作,早于他在1988年创作的中国第一件录像作品《30×30》,亦早于1985年劳申伯格在中国美术馆的个展(该展在当时向中国观众呈现了绘画形式之外的多种可能)。艺术家在画面中以熟练的绘画技巧描绘了看似不可能的某种结构,实际上则是重工业发展时代的实用建筑体,其主题的选择呼应了艺术家当时对于现代版画、在写实中带有象征意味、或超现实的西方绘画的浓厚兴趣。某种程度上说,该作品是80年代的年轻艺术家在涌动的思潮中带着热情与直觉不断尝试自我构建的缩影。对于艺术家个人来说,它也许只是不断尝试新事物的持续实验中的一个碎片,就如他所说的:“我觉得艺术家一旦有一天开始不断地重复自己,基本上他的工作也该结束了。”


Tank was created by Zhang Peili during 1982-1983 while he was studying at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art). It was created earlier than 30×30, the very first video in China by the artist in 1988, and earlier than the icebreaking Rauschenberg's solo exhibition in 1985, which showed in China for the first time the various possibilities of art beyond the form of painting. The piece was drawn with the well-trained skill to depict an almost impossible structure, which was a regular functional building in the heavy industry development period. The choice of subject matter echoes the artist's keen interest in modern printmaking, the symbolic elements in realistic style, or the surrealism in the Western painting works. To a certain extent, this work is the epitome of young artists in the 1980s who were constantly attempting the self-construction with enthusiasm and intuition while diving into the surging trend of thought. For the artist personally, it may just be a fragment of a continual effort of trying new things, as he stated: "I think once the artist starts repeating himself one day, basically his work is over."
