Yasuhiro Ishimoto, born in California, United States, 1921, passed away in 2012
In 1953, American-born artist Yasuhiro Ishimoto returned to live in Japan. In that same year, he was commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York to take photographs of the Imperial palace near Kyoto, known as the Katsura Imperial Villa. Yasuhiro Ishimoto studied at the then Bauhaus School of Design in Chicago; taught by master photographers Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind, Ishimoto combined modern American photography techniques with Bauhaus design concepts. In this Katsura photography series, instead of using conventional architectural photography techniques to record the overall shape of the building, Ishimoto focuses on the abstract lines and structural details in black and white graphics, emphasising the "modern" style of the Katsura Villa, demonstrating the unique perspective of this artist.
