Melvin Edwards, born in Texas, the United States, 1937, lives and works in New York and Dakar, Senegal

当代非裔美国艺术家的先驱之一梅尔文·爱德华兹，他34岁时才第一次踏足非洲。因为在非洲的所见所闻的影响，爱德华兹开始用他的艺术创作向非洲文化及手工艺品致敬。近年来他以焊接为手段，使用铁器、刀、斧、榔头等在非洲最常见的物件重新拼接组合制成雕塑。这些作品的创作过程对于他而言，也是在家和社会的层面上重新探索非洲的过程。

As one of the pioneers in the history of contemporary African- American art, Melvin Edwards did not make his first trip to Africa until he was 34-year-old. Influenced by what he had seen and experienced during his trip, Melvin Edwards started making artworks that pay homage to African culture and artefacts. In recent years, Edwards has been making relief sculptures by welding "familiar form" objects such as machine parts, barbed wire, machetes, etc. Artmaking is his way of discovering and re-discovering Africa, in the sense of family and in the sense of societies.
