Crown Victoria is a zinc cast of the undercarriage of a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Arrayed like ribs along with the chassis, loops of corrugated tubing evoke a giant lying on 4 blocks, wreckage from an accident, or a body undergoing reincarnation. This piece is one of Barney's totemic sculptural forms crystalizing the death, rebirth, and the twilight of modern America, which stem from his 2014 film River of Fundament, a six-hour monumental piece carried out in collaboration with Jonathan Bepler.
The film transports Norman Mailer’s Ancient Evenings (1983) – itself based on the Egyptian Book of the Dead – into a contemporary American setting. In the novel, Mailer as the protagonist incarnates through the destruction and recasting of three iconic American cars. Echoing the distribution of Osiris’s body parts in Egyptian mythology, each reincarnation is completed according to a sophisticated and epic ritual performed in Los Angeles, Detroit, and New York respectively, interweaving the ancient myth with the history of an individual and an American industry.
