Time Life consists of 7 short stop-motion animation videos. Mungo Thomson applied encyclopedic material and used a high-speed internet book scanner to scan the books into digital versions. In the process, the data is re-recorded and automatically synthesized into a dynamic visual effect, as if flipping through a book.
Each short video in Time LIfe represents a different chapter in which Thomson explores the wide range of human experiences. The first 1-4 chapters are drawn from a book called Time Life, while the scripts for the following three chapters are drawn from material collected by the artist from other sources. Thomson aims to explore the process of digitizing and converting analogue materials into data, as well as the information wastage and ambiguity that these materials cause as they are retransmitted over and over on the Internet. From gardening to fitness to cookbooks, the images present the moment when information is transformed from physical to digital, opening up a dialogue around history, technology and perception.
