Mark Manders, born in Volkel, Netherlands, 1968, lives and works in Ronse, Belgium

三十多年来，马克·曼德斯持续创作着他糅合了雕塑、静物和建筑结构的“像建筑一般的自画像”。他的作品中反复出现看似用仍然湿润的黏土塑造的肃静面庞，被粗糙质朴的几何形体的木料、铁块、甚或是日常物件和家具穿插或切合在一起，仿佛作品上一秒中仍在创作中，又好像是突然发现了某个失落已久的远古匠人工作室一角。事实上，看似仍然柔软的黏土实际上是经过涂料处理的树脂或青铜，而粗糙的材质则经过了艺术家的精心挑选和制作，这样细腻的处理使曼德斯得以构筑一种超越语言和时间的诗意表达，让人们能够感受不同的形体和结构传递出的微妙情感和艺术家的内心世界。就如曼德斯自己所说：“我曾想成为一名作家，但我却变得对物体更着迷——着迷于它们与语言和思想的关系。于是我摒弃了词句，开始用物体书写。我想用它们创造一种语言……”

For more than three decades, Mark Manders has been at work on the “self-portrait as a building” in the form of sculpture, still life, and architectural plans. In his works, grey figures, which frequently appear to have been moulded out of soft clay, are conjoined and interspersed with geometric forms of wood and iron, found objects, or even parts of furniture. It’s hard to tell whether his work is roughly finished or discovered in an ancient craftsman’s workshop. The soft hand-made figures are made of painted epoxy or bronze, and all the raw materials and forms are carefully selected or produced by the artist, which enables a poetic transcendence of language and time, different shapes and structures that emit subtle emotions inviting entrance to his inner world. As he explained in his interview “I wanted to be a writer, but I became more fascinated with objects—how they relate to language and thinking. Instead of writing with words, I started to write with objects. I wanted to create a language out of them…”
