"Love is found in connections and links. My work is often precarious (not fragile). Two or more elements meet and the connection between them can be undone, like a bow of ribbon. This has something to do with love, but not a spiritual or symbolic perspective. "
—— Katinka Bock, from the conversation with Aisha Sasha John.
Katinka Bock often challenges the isolated boundaries between sculptures and space and plays the conflict and balance among different materials in her works. Instead of being containers, her ceramic forms are more like the empty soul shells of an object which was just burned out in high temperatures. Sometimes she enables her sculpture works to encompass the entire space and even spread out of the white cube to connect buildings and communities. Meanwhile, the solid works provide a sort of tenderness, which arises a feeling of the soft clothing just slipping off one's shoulder. In the work Liegende (November), the length of the wooden beam, the height of the steel bars, and the shape of the ceramics are all reminiscent of someone lying down and resting on the bed. However, such a sense of peace and relief is based on the delicate tipping point that the artist finds to assemble the three different materials, creating a subtle balance between solid and liquid, fragility and stability, intimacy and publicity.
