On March 22nd, at 7 Dennartt Estate, Sicawei Road, Shanghai, WILLIAM WENN DRUMMOND, aged 73 years.

1907-1908 interpreter and translator to Mr. W.V. Drummond, Law Officer to the Viceroy at Nanking and Taotai at Shanghai.

MR. W. V. DRUMMOND, of Lincoln's Inn, barrister-at-law, who holds the position, under the Chinese Government, of Chief Law Officer for Foreign Affairs in the southern ports of China, has a record of voluntary public service which, in many respects, is unique. He has lived in China for nearly forty years, and throughout the whole of that time he has studied local and imperial affairs connected with the Far East so closely that he is now a recognized authority. This special knowledge he has placed at the disposal of his country on more than one occasion, and, in return, has received the warm acknowledgments of two Secretaries of State.
Born in London in 1841, Mr. Drummond is the son of the late Rev. James Drummond, at that time of Highgate. He was called to the Bar in 1870, and, after practising in Hongkong for two years, came to Shanghai, where he has taken the greatest interest in municipal and social matters. During the last thirty years he has been closely associated with numbers of Chinese officials, has entertained many of them, exchanged views with them on current topics, and so kept abreast of the trend of thought among the governing classes of the Empire. In 1889, at the request of the Viceroy, Mr. Drummond formed a committee to raise money in all parts of the world for the relief of distress in the famine areas in China; and of this committee, which collected about £50,000, he became chairman. During the Chino- Japanese War and the Boxer outbreak, Mr. Drummond proved a mine of information to the British Minister in China, and his services were so highly valued that on each occasion he received the thanks of the British Government through Lord Kimberley and Lord Salisbury. The Emperor of China also conferred upon him the Order of the Sapphire Button, of the Third Rank, and last year he was presented with the Red Button of the Second Rank, the second highest rank in China as a Mandarin. In politics Mr. Drummond is a strong supporter of Mr. Joseph Chamberlain, and is a vice-president of the council of the Liberal Unionist League, a member of the Tariff Reform League, the Liberal Unionist Association, the Liberal Union Club, and the British Empire League, as well as of several London clubs. Mr. Drummond is also the founder and chairman of the Perak Sugar Cultivation Company, Ltd., and the Kalumpong Rubber Company, Ltd., two very large companies carrying on business in the State of Perak in the Malay Peninsula, all the capital for which was raised at Shanghai.

He owns and lives in a fine residence, standing in its own ornamental grounds, on the Siccawei Road.

We learn that the Emperor has granted to Mr. W. V. Drummond a blue button,皇帝已授予担文先生一枚勋章……Time:1889 - 11 - 2
Born in London in 1841, Mr. Drummond is the son of the late Rev. James Drummond, at that time of Highgat。
A LECTURE entitled "Age and Humour" will be given this evening at 8.45 o'clock by Mr. W. V. Drummond at the meeting of the Union Church Literary and Social Guild. Time:1911 - 1 - 25

V. Drummond at the residence of Dr. Reid.
Hillier Collection
The Hillier Collection consists of 53 images, recording the family’s long and distinguished presence in China. Walter, Harry and Guy Hillier pursued careers in three key institutions of Britain’s informal empire in China: the Consular Service, the Chinese Maritime Customs (CMCS) and the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank.
Harry Hillier retired in 1910 after forty years in the Chinese Maritime Customs, for the last twenty of which he had served as Commissioner in various Treaty Ports. Brought up in England, he had come to China in his early twenties and, following the death of his first wife, married Maggie Drummond, the daughter of a successful Shanghai barrister, William Venn Drummond.

Monks partying with the Drummonds
On Thursday afternooп the 27th last month the Rev. Н. М. Trickett, at the invitation of Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Drummond, took out a party of thirty men from H. M. S. Clio to Dennartt, Sicawei Road. The party left the Customs jetty in two detachments, conveyed by the Aquarius motor wagon and by a horse-dray respectively, at 4.30 p.m., and they attracted considerable attention on the route by their songs and their evident enjoyment of this novel mode of conveyance. Mr. and Mrs. Drummond met their guests at the entrance to their grounds, and at once conducted them to the tea-tables, at which the visitors were provided with a substantial meal. Afterwards there were games, and the two hours that elapsed before the party left went by only too rapidly. After a short speech by the Rev. H. M. Trickett, in which he expressed the gratitude of the men for Mr. and Mrs. Drummond's hospitality, and iced drinks and a final cigar, the party left, signalizing their departure by cheer after cheer for their host and hostess(From the North-China Daily News and Herald, 1907).

On my first two visits, unfriendly security guards shooed me away before I could even see whether it was still standing. But fortunately, on my third visit, the guard was briefly away from his post. I slipped through the gate and there was the house, set back to my left, looking much as it did in the photographs, if less grand. In the front, part of the lawn remained, together with a Cedar of Lebanon. I snapped my photos and drank deeply.
Houses can provide a rich source for examining the relationship between family and empire, embodying both the connections and dislocations wrought by colonial life and also the notional ‘home’ to which a colonial family might aspire and then find wanting on its return from a life overseas.
Rev.W.

Maggie dying in 1928 and her mother the following year at the age of 84. Although they were away from their children and in straitened circumstances, for these Shanghailanders, this was their true ‘home’ and this is where they wanted to end their days.
A correspondent kindly calls our attention to a mistake made in the obituary of Mr. W. V. Drummond.
