During her travels in China, Wong continued to be strongly criticized by the Nationalist government and the film community. She had difficulty communicating in many areas of China because she was raised with the Taishan dialect rather than Mandarin. She later commented that some of the varieties of Chinese sounded "as strange to me as Gaelic. I thus had the strange experience of talking to my own people through an interpreter."
Born Wong Liu Tsong in Chinatown, Los Angeles, Wong was the first Chinese American film star and enjoyed a long, varied and international career - making over sixty films. Her first lead role was in the early Technicolor feature The Toll of the Sea (1922). Following performances in Douglas Fairbanks's The Thief of Bagdad (1923) and various 1920s mystery films, she travelled to Europe in 1929. Whilst in London, E. A. Dupont directed Wong in the silent film Piccadilly (1929) from a script and story by Arnold Bennett. She also co-starred with Laurence Olivier on stage in Circle of Chalk (1929). Her most celebrated role was appearing with Marlene Dietrich in Josef von Sternberg's Shanghai Express (1932).
When not at school or in her father’s Sam Kee laundry, Wong began spending her time hanging around movie studios and asking directors for roles, and by age 11, she had chosen her stage name: “Anna May Wong.”黄柳霜11岁为自己起艺名，混电影片场，问导演要角色。

And while reviews of Shanghai Express at the time focused on Marlene Dietrich’s acting and Sternberg’s direction, film historians today judge that Wong’s performance upstaged that of Dietrich (while their sexually charged scenes together have fed rumors about the relationship between the two stars)——Ned Kelly, January 14, 2020.
