In Germany, Father's Day is a bit confusing, especially to many of us who are not from Germany or maybe don't really understand Germany culture.

Father's Day is celebrated in many countries but Germans take it farther. First of all, it has different names depending on the region you are in, names can be Men's Day(Mannertag), Gentlemen's Day (Herrentag), and the common one which is Father's Day (Vatertag).

This is a tradition day for men, young and old, to go out with their wagons, filled with alcohol and get drunk. It is almost a "Responsibility free day" for fathers and it is a public holiday.

When is the Father's Day in Germany and how did it come to be?

The day is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter on a Thursday in May. The following Friday is usually a bruckentag or bridge day, which makes this weekend a 4 days weekend.

It began in the Middle Ages as a religious ceremony honoring "Gott, den Vater" or "God, the father" in the English language. During the 1700s the day transformed into Vatertag, a family day honoring the father of the household. It has since transformed into a "Boys' day out."
