What comes to your mind when you consider buying your first wheel? Well, you can consider buying MIA(Made In Africa) car. The idea might sound crazy but, hold your breath and let's go over a few models that will blow your mind, and may be you will consider putting your hard earned money on these awesome African entrepreneurs.

Laraki

Based in Casablanca, Laraki is a company that produces luxurious high-performance sports cars. Laraki was established in 1999 by a designer and an entrepreneur, his son also studied automobile design and launched his first model, Laraki Fulgura in 2002. The company showcased its second model, Laraki Borac at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show.

Laraki Borac

Laraki epitome was unveiled in 2013, at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. With a 2 million Dollars price tag, it was the most expensive car on the market. This didn't stop Hip hop artist French Montana to buy one of them to support his own.

Saroukh el-Jamahiriya, Libya

The legendary “Libyan rocket” was fast, luxurious and safe. Designed especially for former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 1999, the car, wholly built in Libya, was the country’s pride and joy.

Unfortunately, it never went into full-time production, yet it was a prime example of inventive North African design. Designers claimed it to be one of the safest cars ever made, comparable to Volvo and Saab. It had some innovative safety features, including the ability to drive for miles on flat tires – making it perfect for desert conditions – and a full electronic safety system with airbags. In fact, it was one of the first cars to have airbags for all four seats.

Advanced Automotive Design, South Africa

Pretoria’s Advanced Automotive Design makes racing-style sports cars and has been in business since 1995.

The company is famous in motoring circles for its 2007 Shaka Nynya, named after the Zulu king. It has impressed drivers with its versatility and speed.

Wallyscar, Tunisia

Competing in the lucrative off-road market, the small but powerful Wallyscar, manufactured in La Marsa, Tunisia, is a company founded in 2006.

According to reports from 2014, the company sells over 600 units a year, predominately in Africa and the Middle East, but also as far as Panama and Europe. The company’s plans include making its colorful, off-road vehicles more environmentally friendly, as well as trying its luck in international off-road motorsport.

Bailey Edwards, South Africa

Started in 2003 by brothers Peter and Greg Bailey, Bailey Edwards is a top replica sports car manufacturer based in South Africa. The group builds and customizes classic performance cars such as the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari P4 for clients around the world. It has a factory in New York to service the North American market.

Birkin, South Africa

Founded in 1980 and based in Durban, Birkin Cars is best known for its quality reproductions of the Lotus 7 Series 3, called the Birkin S3. The company exports locally manufactured Lotus and other limited-edition performance car replicas around the world.

The Kantanka (Made in Ghana)

At the moment, some people are already owners of this proudly made in Ghana car. They are on sale in a variety of colors and models. There is the Kantanka SUV, the Kantanka pickup, etc. In case you want to see for yourself, the Katanka Automobile Company’s manufacturing plant is located in Gomoa Mpota in the central region of Ghana.

The Kiira EV Smack (Made in Uganda)

Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) is an automobile manufacturing company in Uganda, which was established in 2012. It began as collaboration between Makerere University, College of Engineering & Industrial Design, the Uganda Ministry of Trade, Industry & Cooperatives, and the Office of the President of Uganda. The government of Uganda has invested over US$70 million in the company.

The Kiira EV Smack is an advanced stage of the formerly produced Kiira EV Prototype.

It is made in a way that is very cost-effective in that it can be powered to use either electricity or diesel.

Mobius Motors (Mobius II – Made in Kenya)

This multi-purpose vehicle which costs about $10,000 was manufactured for Africa’s mass market.

It is an eight-seater vehicle and has a large cargo space with a loading capacity of up to 625 kg and is capable of reaching a top speed of 160 km/hr on a manually transmitted gearbox.

Innoson Motors ( Made in Nigeria)

The year was 1978; a commercial town situated in the Eastern part of Nigeria, called Nnewi was the central hub for motorcycle importation. As it is today for tokunbo (foreign used) cars, so it was then for tokunbo motorcycles, they were the status quo.

By the year 2002, he had successfully driven out tokunbo (foreign used) motorcycles out of Nigeria forever!

The Tanzania Automotive Technology Center (TATC) designs, develop and manufacture motor vehicles and other pieces of machinery in line with its mission.
