WeChat punishes more than 20K accounts for fraud

Wechat released a report on its effort to combat online fraud on 14th this month. According to relevant laws and regulations, after verifying the evidence submitted by users through complaints, WeChat imposed punishment on more than 20,000 accounts that have committed fraud. It also has restricted more than 14,500 confirmed fraudulent payment accounts.

The platform will cooperate with public security organs to further crack down on scammers and fraudsters.

Wechat has also announced two new types of fraud that have recently emerged:

Fraudsters disguised as loan providers.
Malicious marketers disguised as free online painting class providers, green-grocer opening thus giving free fruits as gifts etc.

Wechat team reminds users that banks and regular loan companies will not require borrowers to pay various fees, such as processing fees, in advance. If anyone ask you to pay fees in advance, this should raise an alarm.

They added that most of the free online painting class or green-grocer opening and thus giving free fruits as gifts goes further than just cheating you money. As soon as you add them, they will let you add a third party(one of their own) and invite you in their group. In the group they will encourage you to add more of your friends and share their QR codes or ads on your moments. Before you know it, you have spent a lot of time sharing their products to your friends and connections, which might put your own friends at the risk of fraud.
