This is a notice translated directly from the website of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the United States of America. The notice was posted on May 25th.
Recently, a number of Chinese citizens reported that they had been questioned by US border customs law enforcement officers for a long period of time, and their mobile phones, computers and other electronic devices were checked when they left the country. Some of the electronic devices were temporarily confiscated by law enforcement officers for further inspection.
近日，多名中国公民反映在出境时被美边境海关执法人员长时间盘问并检查随身携带的手机、电脑等电子设备，部分人员的电子设备被执法人员暂扣以做进一步检查。
According to US law, US border customs law enforcement officers have the right to inspect all travelers, including checking their personal information, immigration purposes, and items they carry, without having to apply for a search warrant in advance. US border law enforcement officers can search passengers’ mobile phones and other electronic devices without suspicion, and can carry out upgrade searches on passengers’ electronic devices, or temporarily confiscated relevant electronic devices.
根据美国法律，美边境海关执法人员有权对所有出入境人员进行检查，包括查验其个人信息、出入境目的和携带物品等，无须事先申请搜查令。美边境执法人员无需怀疑即可搜查旅客的手机等电子设备，并可对旅客电子设备进行升级搜查，或暂扣相关电子设备。
The Chinese Embassy in the United States reminds Chinese citizens in the United States, especially overseas students, to pay attention to the US entry and exit regulations, and to raise awareness of self-protection so as not to cause inconvenience and loss to themselves when leaving the country.
中国驻美国使馆提醒在美中国公民特别是留学人员注意了解美方出入境有关规定，提高自我保护意识，以免出境时对自己造成不便和损失。
