Man contracts Hantavirus after drinking a canned beverage

According to various media reports, Mr. Chen, a Shenzhen truck driver bought a bottle of iced canned beverage and consumed it directly from the can. Not so long after, he developed hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Experts from the People’s Hospital of Longhua District, Shenzhen believe that the cause of his illness was the bottled beverage that he drunk directly from the can to his mouth. This infection is basically related to rats, and it is suspected that the beverage cap were contaminated by the rodent's excrement.

According to experts, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is mainly caused by rodents carrying Hantavirus. Hemorrhagic fever is a natural epidemic disease in which rodents (Apodemus sylvaticus and Rattus norvegicus) are the main source of infections. It mainly spreads through contact, respiratory tract and digestive tract. The crowd is generally susceptible and the incubation period is generally 7-14 days. However, hemorrhagic fever cases are more common in areas with frequent rat activities, such as rural and urban-rural junctions.

At present, after treatment, the patient is gradually recovering. Many netizens shared that one should always clean the top of the can before consuming the drinks directly with mouth, or better yet, use a glass or a cup.

▲Problems with the design: 

1. It is easier for dirty to fall inside the can when you open it.

2. The liquid from inside comes on top and dilute the dirty, which will then be consumed by the customer.

Other netizens also pointed out that the design of canned bottles top is problematic, since as soon as you open the lid, stuffs from outside the can will fall inside it. And others commented that they didn't know the practical reason for the design.

Buy beverage with covered top design, or wipe the top before consuming.

When in doubt, use a drinking straw.
