South Korean Ambassador to China Jang Ha-sung said China has agreed to issue visas to expats and those who have a valid residence permit around early August in what would be Beijing’s first easing in visa ban since the outbreak of coronavirus, according to a Korean top envoy to Beijing.
“China has agreed to issue visas for three groups – students, employees holding Chinese work visa called Z visa and people with valid residence permits,” the ambassador said during a press conference in Beijing on Monday. The visa issuance is expected to resume in early August, according to the briefing.
But those with expired residence permits would not be included in the grant, and Jang said the issue needs a further discussion with China.
Apart from South Korea, three other countries have agreed to resume cross-border travel of people with China, namely, Pakistan, Nepal, and Afghanistan.
"We will resume cross-border flow of people in an orderly manner when certain conditions are met and discuss setting up of fast track and green channels," said Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Wang Wenbin on Tuesday.
The arrangement was announced after Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi hosted a foreign meeting with the three countries to discuss about Covid-19. The four parties reached a consesus on joint fight against Covid-19 as well as resuming economic and social activities.
"We believe as partners and neighbours, the four countries have reached fruitful outcomes including timely sharing of information and joint fight against the pandemic." The Foreign Ministry's spokesperson added.
