Zhang Ji, a doctoral student from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO), has received Huawei's top "young genius" package, with an annual salary of 2.01 million yuan (around 300,000 US$), according to the university.

This makes Zhang Ji the only Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) student to receive Huawei's top-tier treatment for graduates this year.

According to HUST, Zhang Ji has published multiple papers as first author in conferences and journals such as ATC, DAC, ICPP, SIGMOD, VLDB, and IEEE TPDS.

Born in 1993 in Tongshan, Hubei Province, Zhang Ji was always the best student during his undergraduate studies and was ranked among the best students in his department.

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei had mentioned in a speech within Huawei's EMT (management team) that 20-30 "gifted teenagers" will be recruited from around the world every year. Huawei recruits "young geniuses" who are paid on an annual salary system, with a maximum annual salary of 2.01 million yuan.

In addition to Huawei, Zhang Ji had also received offers from Tencent, IBM, Alibaba, Sangfor Technologies, and two startups, the highest of which offered more than RMB 3.6 million a year, but he chose Huawei.

"The main reason I chose Huawei was to be able to do something meaningful with a group of like-minded people, during the time that the company is going through challenging times." he said.

Zhang Ji said Huawei's recruitment criteria for "young geniuses" is very strict, generally going through about seven rounds of process.

This includes a resume screening, a written test, a preliminary interview, a supervisor interview, an interview with the department head, an interview with the president, and an interview with HR. At each step of the process, candidates are rigorously evaluated and screened.

His motto: There are many people who work harder than you, what reasons do you have for not making progress?

Quote for the day

"Somebody told me about it when I was still a little boy. He said to me, crime does not pay, he said to me, education is the key."
