It is not a secret that British English is miles from what is spoken by other English (even native) speaking countries. Even once you have trained your ears to listen, and your brain to comprehend their accent and different dialects, there are still certain British slangs that would always sound funny to the non-British. Let’s have a look at a few British slangs and their meaning.
1. Give you a bell – this one is not that hard to understand. When someone says they will ‘give you a bell’ what they mean is that they will call you.
2. Know your onions – This one has nothing to do with cooking or vegetables. It means to be very knowledgeable about something.

3. Bog roll is toilet paper.
4. A few sandwiches short of a picnic -- Someone who’s not very intelligent
She is very pretty, but she is a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
5. Chuffed – It means overjoyed or full of pride.
Congratulations on the promotion. You must be chuffed.
6. Codswallop – Nonsense or untrue
What a load of codswallop!
7. Full of beans – Someone who is energetic or enthusiastic can be described as full of beans.
By jolly, aren’t you full of beans thismorning.
8. Gobsmacked – shocked or astounded
She had everyone gobsmacked with her new look.
9. On it like a car bonnet – having something under control
How’s the report going, Steve?
Don’t worry boss, I am on it like a car bonnet.
10. Zonked – Exhausted or tired
I wanted to go to Alan’s party but I was absolutely zonked after work.
