According to a Bangladesh news report on October 26, a doctor has been diagnosed for Covid-19 for the third time, with symptoms seemingly more severe than when he contracted the disease for the first time. Furthermore, 24 other cases of second infection (re-infection) were also reported.
Most of the patients said that their second infections were more debilitating, with fever, body pain and coughing more pronounced than the first infection.
Das, a doctor at the local Hospital, is the first confirmed person to contract COVID-19 three times in Bangladesh. He told the media that in the second week of April this year, he felt fever and body aches, so he took a test for Covid. The test report came back positive on April 18. At that time, the symptoms were mild and after 9 days of isolation at home, he was tested again and the result turned negative.
In the last week of June, he had symptoms of novel coronavirus again. He took the test and the results came back on July 2 confirming that he was infected with novel coronavirus for the second time. This time, symptoms included loss of appetite, moreover, fever and body aches were more severe than when he was infected for the first time. He isolated at home taking antibiotics and paracetamol to reduce fever. On July 21, he tested negative. After resting at home for seven days, he returned to work in the hospital.
In the second week of October, he started experiencing Covid symptoms again and was tested positive on October 17. By this time, his body temperature was fluctuating between 38.3 and 38.9 degrees Celsius, symptoms also included body pain, cough, shortness of breath, and his body felt weaker than the first two times.
Dr. A. S. M. Alamgir, senior scientific officer at the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research in Bangladesh, told the local newspaper that within six months of the first infection, the virus may become dormant in a patient's body and cause a second infection, adding that it is alarming to see such cases.
"This is a rare case, and there are two possible reasons: one is that the person's immune system and resistance is weak, so the antibody stays in the body for too short a time, leading to a third infection. The second possibility might be that the virus has undergone a greater degree of mutation, and the antibodies originally produced are no longer sufficient to resist the virus," Wang Peiyu, deputy head of Peking University's School of Public Health, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
Yang Zhanqiu, Deputy Director of the Pathogen Biology Department at Wuhan University, told the Global Times on Wednesday that this particular case may be caused by viruses from different sources or different forms. The first time when the doctor was tested positive, he may have been infected with the virus from the local community, and later, could have been infected with the virus from the US.
"This is a very rare case and it is unlikely to happen in China now," Yang said.
