A man in Chuzhou borrowed 70,000 yuan from his friend, but when it came to paying back he chose to pay using ghost money, also called "Joss paper". The ghost money, along with other papier-mâché items (usually expensive stuff) are burned as a part of Chinese tradition – on holidays to venerate the deceased, and also at funerals, to make sure that the spirits have plenty of good things in the afterlife. But his friend is alive and have no  plans on entering the afterlife so soon, so he reported the matter to the police.

There is a saying in Swahili language, "Kukopa harusi, kulipa matanga" which means "Borrowing is like marriage(ceremony), while paying back is like mourning". In Chinese language there is a saying "有借有还再借不难" in pinyin is written as "Yǒu jiè yǒu huán zài jiè bù nán", which literally means "Its not difficult to borrow again when you have paid back what you borrowed." If you have ever loaned someone some money, you will be able to understand why our ancestors came up with these sayings.

Speaking of mourning, every culture has its own way of mourning the deceased, some extreme and some take a relaxed approach. Sometimes in China, you will see people burning stuffs in the street, usually fake money which is also called "Joss paper" and it is a means of sending their relatives and friends who have passed away some money to spend in the afterlife.

In this case, one man borrowed 70,000 yuan from a friend, but because he didn't have enough money to pay him back, he bought a large amount of  Joss paper. So why he bought a lot of Joss paper? Well, he was not going to send them to his relatives in the afterlife, but he used them to pay back his loan in this life, he stack them such that the first and last banknote is real, but in the middle of the bundle of seemingly-real banknotes, he put loads of Joss paper.

Unexpectedly, at least to the man in this case, his friend later noticed that the money did have a weird issuer, we need our legal tender to be issued by the Bank of China right? These ones were issued by the "Bank of Underground." So he called the cops and explained his case.

Police took the case and contacted the man, after persuasion from the police he decided to surrender himself and received criticism and education at the station. The case is still being processed by the police, we will let you know of the outcome.

What is the worst thing that has ever happened to you when you borrowed someone money? Let us know in the comment section~
