The days of strolling into an airport, flashing a passport, then hopping on a flight to wherever one likes are, for now, a distant memory.
The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed the travel landscape, potentially for decades to come.
Countries all over the world are entering fresh lockdowns, but even when restrictions do lift, it's likely that mandatory vaccination before air travel may soon be a necessity. Here comes the health passport...
While travel has been restricted, global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners has released its 2021 quarterly report on the world's most desirable passports.
No.10: The citizens of Hungary (its capital, Budapest, is pictured below) enjoy visa-free access to 181 destinations.
No. 9: Canadian citizens have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 183 destinations.
No. 8: Citizens of Greece, Australia, Malta and the Czech Republic (its capital, Prague, is pictured below) have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 184 countries.
No. 7: Holders of passports from the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand and Belgium find doors open to them in 185 jurisdictions.
No.6: Swedish passport holders have visa-free access to 186 countries, earning it the sixth spot on the Passport Index, alongside France, Portugal, Netherlands and Ireland.
No. 5: Joint fifth on the list, with access to 187 destinations, are Denmark (whose nationals are pictured) and Austria.
No. 4: Pictured is the crossing between Finland and Russia in the Finnish border town of Imatra. Finland ranks fourth on the list of "best passports," while the Russian Federation ranks 51st. Italy, Spain and Luxembourg join Finland in fourth place, with citizens getting visa-free access to 188 countries.
No. 3: Germany (pictured) offers its citizens visa-free/visa-on-arrival access to 189 countries, so does South Korea.
No. 2: Singapore holds the 2nd place spot on the index. It offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 190 jurisdictions.
No. 1: Japan holds the top place for 2021. With this little document, 191 jurisdictions will welcome its holder to cross their borders.
Note: Henley's index doesn't take temporary travel restrictions into account, so Japan is once again top of the leaderboard, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 191 destinations around the world.
The temporary travel restrictions mean that -- while the UK and United States are placed seventh on Henley's list -- the reality is that US passport holders are currently able to travel to fewer than 75 destinations, while UK passport holders have access to fewer than 70.
