A high school student in China said that he was sexually assaulted and bullied for being gay for months, but his teachers told him to endure the ongoing attacks or drop out.

According to the South China Morning Post, the 16-year-old boy said that in one of the most severe incidents, he was stripped naked, pinned to the floor, and then filmed by some of his classmates, who forced him to watch pornography while stimulating his genitals.

One attacker reportedly said, “Shouldn’t this give you pleasure since you are gay?”

The teen, known simply as Xiaohao, discussed his harrowing experience late last week, writing on an online student help forum.

“I am a homosexual. My dorm-mates bullied me. But the teachers asked me to put up with them and suggested I should drop out of the school,” he wrote.

Eight teens were reportedly involved in the incidents. But according to the South China Morning Post, their only punishment was to write self-criticism letters and transcribe student behavior guidelines.

On Monday, Xiaohao told local news outlet Hongxing News that he is planning on suing them.

According to the teen, he repeatedly asked school officials for help, but nothing was ever done. A few months later, he tried to commit suicide.

Last month he was diagnosed with severe depression.

Bin Xu, the co-founder of a Rainbow Anti-Gender-Based Violence Service Center, a nonprofit that provides legal support to the LGBTQ community in China, told SMCP that, “this is quite a typical case,” adding that “many LGBT minors develop mental health issues after suffering traumatic school bullying.”

The organization, which is providing support to Xiaohao, has worked on similar cases since 2016.

The case highlights an ongoing issue in Chinese state-run public schools. Besides failing to educate students on anti-bullying issues and gender and sexual diversity, school officials often refuse the help from third-party support organizations.

“It’s unrealistic for public security forces to monitor those cases constantly. You have to allow nonprofit organizations to work with schools to manage it,” said Zhu Bao, a Beijing-based attorney who represents LGBTQ clients.

“Because even if you solve this one case by arresting those boys, you won’t be able to help other cases that are happening.”

Last month, the country’s ministry of education announced a plan to boost the “masculinity” of young students of young men in Chinese schools.

The “Proposal on Preventing the Feminization of Male of Adolescents” came in response to a suggestion by a top political adviser named Si Zefu, who said that China needed to combat an increasing “feminization” of young men, described by him as “delicate, cowardly and effeminate.”

Si called for an increase in the number of male teachers to “combat the issue” while voicing concern over the “threat to the development and survival of our nation.”
