Parents of a student in Shapingba District of Chongqing paid 210,000 yuan for their child to attend an after school math training center.
With that amount of training fee, you'd expect the child will turn to a math whiz, but when he took a math exam at school he scored well below passing mark. He scored 59% making his parents angry and so they went to the training center to get an explanation.
Things escalated to a point that police were called to intervene.
Training schools in China
It was the first weekend for me in Changsha city of Hunan Province when I decided to meet some of the parents whose children go to school with my child so we can get to know each other.
After calling several of them, I quickly realized that there was no way I could meet any of them, this is because most or all of them were busy sending their children to after school training classes.
Chinese people have always attached special importance to education, so much such that during the weekends parents and their children may be busier than even during the weekdays. On the contrary, to me weekends are for resting and spending quality time with my son.
The illustration above is the reality in which most of the Chinese children have to deal with everyday. Apart from the amount of homeworks they get from school, attending an after school class means adding another homework.
Take a typical weekend for a kid in Beijing for example, after math and English classes in the morning, they have to rush to another part of Beijing for afternoon ballet lessons and/or calligraphy courses. And after dinner, the piano teacher, drawing classes, Chinese classes, etc.
Taking an after school class always comes with a huge bill to pay, you'd expect that your child will improve on the subjects that they are taking. But what if they don't?
110 Call
On April 20, at around 3PM, police in Shapingba district received an emergency call asking for their help. The caller said there are people at their training center giving them troubles.
After reaching the training center, the said "offenders" said they were not making any troubles but simply asking for an explanation.
Parents' Side of the Story
Mr. Yang's son is on the third year of high school, he wanted to improve his son's math skills and a friend introduced him to a training school. He paid 210,000 yuan for the classes thinking that his child will score full marks, i.e. 100% on the next exam.
When his child scored 59%, he was angry and felt cheated by the training school, so he and his wife went to the school to ask for an explanation.
Head of the Training School's Side of the Story
The head of the training school said that Mr. Yang's child was scoring around 20% before taking their math training program. He thinks that 59% is already a great improvement to the child, but the parents are not being reasonable. He said they accussed him of "deceiving them."
Police Officer's Conclusion
After listening to both sides, the police officer told the parents that they can't just "buy" out their child's score by paying too much on training centers.
There are many things involved and they should lower their expectations. Furthermore if they think the training center's fees are unreasonable , they can lodge a complaint on relevant departments for investigation.
He also urged the head of the training school to show clearly the standard of their school fees and student's attendance record to prove that there were no foul play.
Conclusion
Following the police officer's advice, the two sides promised to deal with the matter reasonably and settle everything in a professional way. Both sides agreed that a child can't just jump from scoring 20% to 100% magically, scores will improve but gradually, regardless of how much parents spent on school fees.
