Getting a scholarship to study in China is not as hard as it appears. There are many scholarship opportunities for international students.

Over 50,000 foreign students studying in China have a scholarship. The scholarship can cover the full tuition, accommodation, and living expenses, which can go up to 30,000 USD depending on the level of study.

There are two main types of scholarships in Chinese universities for international students.

  • Chinese scholarship Council (CSC)

  • University scholarships.

Other types of scholarships include local government scholarships, Confucius Institute Scholarships, MOFCOM Scholarships, ISSP scholarships, Enterprise scholarships, and many more.

The Chinese scholarship council or the Chinese government scholarship is probably the biggest way to get scholarships. There are more than 280 universities that accept students on this scholarship.

The CSC is based in Beijing, and they assign a quota to universities and embassies worldwide. Each of these gets a number of students they can accept for the scholarship.

How you apply

You need to apply on the CSC government scholarship online application system. Ensure you find a suitable university that is offering a course affiliated with Chinese government scholarships.

There are three types of CSC scholarships:

CSC category A: You can select this category if you are making your application via the China embassy. You apply to a maximum of two universities.

CSC category B: You can select this one if you are making your application via the university. You apply to a maximum of three universities.

CSC category C: You can select if you are applying via other sources.

Once you make the online application, print and prepare all the documents and send them to the embassy or the university for processing, depending on the category application you've made.

CSC and university scholarships are utterly separate, and you can decide to apply to both the embassy and the university to increase your chances. Once they have checked the application, they shortlist the candidates they have given the scholarship.

A list of those candidates is then sent to the CSC office in Beijing. If your name is on the list, they will update you through email or any other channel you provided.

The timing of the scholarship

The scholarship application is normally open from January, February, and March. University scholarships can have different deadlines depending on each university.

Tips to increase the chances of

getting a scholarship

Make a good application

Firstly, you need to have a really strong and complete application. Make sure that you have all the required application documents.

Understand the university of your choice

Make sure you understand the university you're applying for. Different universities may have different policies.

For example, some may require you to have a pre-admission letter when making a scholarship application.

Therefore, you have to get one.

Learn a little bit of Chinese

If you can speak some Chinese, it absolutely helps. You can take an online program to get a certificate. For example, Beijing language and culture university offers online certificate programs. You can take one of these courses for 12 weeks.

Once you get a certificate, attach it to your application. It will ultimately help because it shows that you've already been studying some Chinese. The higher the Chinese level that you have, the better.

Apply early

Another essential tip is making sure you apply as early as possible. A lot of the scholarships go to students who apply earlier. Why not increase your chances by applying as early as you can? If you apply late, competition is higher, which means low chances.

Double-check

When preparing your application documents, double-check that everything is 100% perfect before sending. They often receive many applications and probably don't get time to give feedback to all the students.

Therefore, it is imperative to give all the documents correctly. You can try to make a follow-up to ensure your application is in the right progress.

Choose your program wisely

There are few programs that you might want to consider while applying for the scholarship. There are around 4,500 programs in China in English, but you can also study Chinese programs.

If you study a Chinese program, you actually have a higher chance of getting a scholarship because China wants more people to speak Chinese.

For instance, if you study a foundation program in Beijing Language and culture college for one year in Chinese, you can get a full scholarship at Tianjin University.

Bottom line

The Chinese government scholarship can take time to be processed. The process can take up to five months or more, depending on the country you are applying from.

It is essential to handle your application process by yourself. Other people may find this process time-consuming and tiresome. However, it is worth it.
