The Ningbo People's Procuratorate in East China's Zhejiang Province on Friday prosecuted a foreign male on homicide charges following an investigation into the murder of a Chinese woman on June 14.
The defendant is being prosecuted under Act 232 of the Criminal Law. The facts of the crime are clear with authorities having obtained and verified several key items of evidence. The defendant must be held accountable for intentional homicide and punished in accordance with the law, the procuratorate statement reads.
Following the discovery of the murdered female, local police launched an investigation and detained the suspect the following day. Their investigations concluded on July 23 and were handed to the procuratorate.
The accused confessed to murdering the woman over a dispute within their relationship. According to an online post purportedly released by parent of the victim, the victim is a college student in a local university and the alleged suspect was a foreign teacher who lectured at the college where the victim was studying. The police didn't identify the victim and suspect as a college student and teacher at the college.
The case had triggered outrage among the public, who called for severe punishment considering the serious nature of the case.
China's Criminal Law provides that foreigners who commit criminal offenses in China's territory, except those with diplomatic immunity, are directly subject to penalties prescribed in China's criminal law.
