The National Bureau of Statistics has recently revealed that there are currently 7 mega cities and 14 megalopolises in China. Shanghai remains at the top as the largest city in China, in terms of urban population. It is followed by Beijing and Shenzhen.
The statistical chart of economic and social development was published on the 18th issue of Qiushi magazine.
Megacities are cities with an urban population of more than 10 million. That being said, a city like Hangzhou which has more than 10 million people but its urban population is 8.74 million, does not qualify as a megacity.
Moreover, Wuhan, which is usually referred to as a megacity, has been classifed as a megalopolis in the report this year with an urban population of 9.95 million.

There are 14 megalopolises, among them, Wuhan is only 50,000 people shy of the threshold for megacities. According to the report, megalopolises are defined as cities with an urban population of more than 5 million and less than 10 million.

The urban population refers to the permanent resident population in the urban area.
In the previous report released in 2020, there were six megacities in China, namely Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Tianjin. Megalopolises amounted to 10 cities, which are Dongguan, Wuhan, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Zhengzhou, Xi'an, Jinan, Shenyang and Qingdao.
The definitions of "Megacity" and "Megalopolis" in this article are translated from the China's National Bureau of Statistics' standard of "超大城市" and "特大城市" respectively.
The definition and translation may vary according to the situation, for example an article published by China Daily "Top 10 Chinese megacities by GDP" defined Megacity as:
Megacities refer to those with a permanent population between 5 million and 10 million in urban areas in China's city-tier system.
According to Wikipedia:
A megacity is a very large city, typically with a population of more than 10 million people. Precise definitions vary: the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs in its 2018 "World Urbanization Prospects" report counted urban agglomerations having over 10 million inhabitants.
A University of Bonn report held that they are "usually defined as metropolitan areas with a total population of 10 million or more people". Others list cities satisfying criteria of either 5 or 8 million and also have a population density of 2,000 per square kilometre. The terms conurbation, metropolis, and metroplex are also applied to the latter.
So in case there's any confusion on this article, the China's National Bureau of Statistics' standard of "超大城市" and "特大城市" definition applies.
