Fourteen-year-old Han Shuya had appendectomy when she was attending primary school grade 3. She was admitted to a hospital where she would spend 3 months lying on the bed.
When she was discharged, a nightmare in her life began. Her classmates and other students started calling her all sorts of names and ostracized her because of the way she looks.
She said that teachers saw the bullying but pretended as if it was nothing. What's even worse is that when she told her parents about it, they blamed herself.
"They said if I don't bother others then no one will bother me, so it is my fault. I feel like they don't love me at all."
To avoid bullies, she changed three schools, but each was worse than the last. Eventually, she quit school when she was 14 years old. She said the bullying was too much, boys were throwing stones at her for no reason. At one time she was hit on the forehead and bled all the way back home.
"The society has changed, if one is not coming from a well-off family or is not good looking, then people look down upon you."
"I quit school to attend a boot camp to lose weight. When I first arrived, I weighed 108 kgs, and after a month at the camp, I lost 12 kgs."
The Fat Camps
China has the world’s largest population of overweight children, and a new industry has popped up to solve this problem — fat camps.
The country's obesity rate has been on the rise, especially among younger people. A survey found that one in five children aged between 6 and 17 is either overweight or obese.
Shuya chose a camp that helps teenagers lose weight which is part of one of China’s largest fat camp chains called The Biggest Loser—no relation to the hit TV show.
The company started 15 years ago. Today, it has 31 branches across China. It runs all year round, but it’s busiest during summer, when people take time out from school to be there. Right now, it’s hosting 200 kids.
"We guarantee that the girls will lose at least 7% of their weight. The boys will lose at least 8%," said Ye Shengyu, manager at the Biggest Loser Youth Camp."
And the fees? It costs 17,800 yuan for 28 days.
“I gave up everything to go there,” said Shuya, “all I wanted was to lose weight.”
On the camps, Shuya and others follow a strict diet, do physical exercises everyday and they only have an hour to use smartphones. Meals provided by the camps are made special for them—to limit their calorie intake but cover basic nutritional needs.
On the first week at the camp, Shuya said she got so tired everyday and at some point she could hardly lift her legs which were sore.
Goals
She set her goal at 50 kgs, saying she believes at that weight she will be thinner than most average girls her age, which she thinks is better.
After nearly two months at the camp, Shuya lost about 15 kgs, she left the camp but has kept healthy habits she picked up at the camp. She says she in now more confident and can buy clothes that fits her body easily.
