A woman was filmed on january 2 making fun of and harrassing male passengers who occupied seats on a priority carriage for women on a Shenzhen subway.
"Congratulations on becoming a beautiful lady in 2022. I wish you success in losing weight!" She told one of the men.
"It's already 2022, and still there are men shamelessly occupying the seats in the women's priority carriage." She added.
Seeing no one responding to her claims, she became more agitated and walked inside the carriage, scolding male passengers one by one.
The video caused a huge discussion online, as some netizens said the woman was right because it is a priority carriage for women. Only that the method she used to deliver the message was a tad off.
However, some netizens also thought that priority carriages for women does not mean that men can not occupy seats on these carriages and neither are they obliged to give up their seats to the ladies.
On January 2, BAFLA news reporter called the Shenzhen Metro service hotline asking for clarification. The staff told our reporter that Shenzhen Metro reserves the first or last two carriages in some subway lines as women priority carriages.
The practice aims to advocate giving priority to women, but it does not prohibit men from using them. Whether men should give up their seats to women or not, she told our reporter that this must follow the principle of voluntariness and it is not mandatory.
So What is the Point?
The intention of establishing "women's priority carriages" is to advocate social civilization, the staff told our reporter.
But but but...
Netizens are left confused following this incident, because if you think about it, how does these carriages differ from normal subway carriages?
