China Expands Covid Lockdown

China’s National Health Commission reported 5,656 new asymptomatic and 326 new symptomatic Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, up from the previous day’s numbers of 4,381 and 96, respectively due to this reason
Shanghai authorities began locking down some western areas of Shanghai two days ahead of schedule as the number of Covid-19 cases in China's financial hub continued to sharply rise, despite half the city already being under a stringent lockdown.
Shanghai is currently on the third day of a planned two-phase ban by the metropolis, which initially included a five-day lockdown for the eastern and western parts of the city, which is almost divided along the Huangpu River.
Several residents living in western districts on Tuesday received notice from their housing committees that they would be stopped from leaving their compounds for the next seven days.
Meanwhile, the city's southwestern district of Minhang, home to more than 2.5 million people, said it would suspend public bus services until April 5.
They also said they planned to disinfect places such as office buildings, construction sites, wet markets, and schools in a month-long campaign.
China recorded a record number of domestic CoVID-19 cases in March, health officials said Tuesday, even as Shanghai's financial center is stepping up its lockdown to stem the rising infection.

More than 70,000 household cases were reported in China in March, the National Health Commission said, the highest number of infections since the epidemic began in 2020. Variety, BA.2, affecting 28 provincial-level areas.
A report in the state-run Global Times said “Epidemiologists said that such a rapid increase in cases in this short time frame indicates the difficulty of quashing this wave quickly and returning the country to a state of zero-Covid as has been the case with previous waves”.
City authorities have converted the vast Shanghai World Expo Centre (SWEC) into a venue to quarantine mild cases and asymptomatic carriers amid the latest Covid-19 surge. It will provide more than 15,000 beds for patients.
The Chinese government is attempting to limit the economic blow of Shanghai’s lockdown on trade and business and has announced 21 measures to help enterprises affected by Covid-19 to cut losses.
Due to this hard situation, City authorities have converted the vast Shanghai World Expo Centre (SWEC) into a venue to quarantine mild cases and asymptomatic carriers amid the latest Covid-19 surge. It will provide more than 15,000 beds for patients.
Police are using drones to remind citizens to wear masks and keep distancing.
Overall, the Chinese mainland reported 8,655 local Covid-19 cases for Tuesday of which at least 1,565 were symptomatic and the rest asymptomatic infections.
Of the new local symptomatic infections, the largest 1150 were reported from the northeastern province of Jilin.
