Guangzhou Suspends in-Person School Classes over COVID-19

After discovering another transmission chain of the Omicron variety, The southern Chinese city of Guangzhou has announced the suspension of on-site activities at all kindergartens, primary schools, and middle schools in the city starting Monday.



The city’s authorities announced in a news conference on Sunday afternoon that all the students of primary and middle schools are required to stay at home and take virtual classes until further notice.


The physical education exam for the city's senior high school entrance exam, which was originally scheduled for April 11, will also be temporarily suspended.


 If the school can provide a hostel for Grade 12 students who will soon take the National College entrance exam, they are allowed to stay on campus.

Out-of-campus training institutes have also been asked to suspend face-to-face activities and hosting institutions have been asked to suspend their services.


At Sunday's news conference, health officials in Guangzhou reported that the strain of the virus on new cases in the city was not in line with earlier tensions in the province, indicating a new wave of transmission.


Guangzhou told its residents not to leave the city unless it was necessary. People who need to leave the city must provide a negative nuclear test and test result within 2 days.



According to the news, eleven districts of the city have launched Nucleic acid testing campaigns. As of Sunday noon, a total of over 19 million people had been sampled.


According to the local health department, Guangzhou registered 18 confirmed and 9 asymptomatic cases on Sunday.
