On Monday, Shanghai started using a three-zone epidemic management system that categorizes neighborhoods according to the degree of COVID-19 infections, allowing certain inhabitants to move about with restrictions.

The city, which had been under lockdown, provided a list of almost 17,600 localities based on the most recent citywide nucleic acid test findings, which were available on Monday morning. The segmented epidemic control system will continue to keep the list updated.

Lockdown (7,624 communities), regulated (2,460 communities), and precautionary (2,460) zones were used to categorize communities (7,565). District administrations have started using social media platforms such as WeChat to announce the condition of communities.

Residents in lockdown zones are expected to stay at home for a week under closed-loop monitoring if new illnesses have been recorded in the previous seven days.

Neighborhoods in controlled zones have had no illnesses recorded in the preceding week. Residents are allowed to pick up food delivery or go for a walk in specific areas within the complex at staggered hours.

Communities in precautionary zones have not reported illnesses in the previous 14 days. Residents are permitted to leave their neighborhood but must remain inside their subdistrict, and they are advised to keep their movements to a minimum.

The Shanghai municipal government's deputy secretary-general, Gu Honghui, said the classification list is susceptible to change based on community infection scenarios, and the government would continuously update and revise it.

"Our principle, as always," he stated at a daily briefing on the city's epidemic management position, "is to endeavor to minimize the impact of the virus on inhabitants' everyday life.

Residents in cautious zones are encouraged to avoid needless activities outside their houses and continue working remotely, Gu added because the virus's spread throughout the city is still at a high level.

On Sunday, Shanghai recorded 26,087 COVID-19 local infections, with 914 confirmed cases. For the fourth day in a row, the number of newly reported illnesses in the city has topped 20,000.

Epidemic control techniques like lockdowns, according to Liang Wannian, director of the National Health Commission's COVID-19 task group, may create immediate problems, but they are vital in the long run.

"Take, for example, Shanghai. To go back to normal in the long run, we've taken strong procedures to consider the larger picture of the entire country, including the municipality itself "On Sunday, he stated.

More than 3,000 persons who tested positive for COVID-19 were discharged from medical monitoring on Sunday, according to Shanghai's health department. Since the epidemic began in March, this was the largest number of COVID patients released in a single day.

"Recovered persons must do self-health monitoring at home for seven days, refrain from going out, stay in a well-ventilated room apart from their family members if possible, and avoid close contact with them," she advised.
