China to Permit 'some' Indian Students to Return

Indian students enrolled in Chinese universities, who have been banned from returning to that country since 2020 due to the pandemic, can finally return to finish their courses, but only after Beijing gives them permission on a "need-to-know" basis.
The decision comes a month after Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar raised the issue with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during their meeting in Delhi and after the Indian government halted issuing visas to Chinese tourists amid the worsening Covid situation in this country.
The Foreign Ministry said on Friday that China "has expressed its willingness to consider facilitating the return of Indian students to China based on a needs assessment."
The government has set a deadline of May 8 by which students intending to return to China must submit their details by filling out a form to be published by the Embassy of India in China on its website. The form is then forwarded to the relevant Chinese authorities.

These students have not been allowed to return to China to complete their studies due to the Covid lockdown and their visas have been suspended. Matters have also been exacerbated by growing acrimony between the two countries over the military standoff on the Line of Actual Control that began in early 2020.
