Chinese web watchdog has launched a three-month campaign since March to trammel on improper and black short videos and livestreams.
120,000 illegal user accounts were closed, 563,000 illegal livestreaming studios were dealt with, 2.351 million illegal short videos were removed, and 218,600 illegal livestreamers and short video accounts were punished during the campaign run by the Cyberspace Administration of China and other related departments.
According to the Cyberspace Administration of China on Saturday, this effort has affected a total of 16 significant livestreaming and short video platforms, including Douyin (the Chinese counterpart of TikTok), Taobao, and WeChat.
134 websites with information security management flaws and insufficient problem rectification have been investigated and punished during the campaign by cyberspace administration departments at all levels, with fines totaling more than 12 million yuan ($1.77 million).
The focus of the campaign was on “pornography, ugly, weird, fraudulent, vulgar, gambling,” and other unlawful contents. The crackdown also targeted prominent issues including the erratic lives of internet celebrities, improper tips for livestreamers, unlawful profiteering, and malicious marketing.
Platforms like Kuaishou, Bilibili, and Huya Live that transmit offensive material like pornography, vulgarity, physical abuse, and encouragement of tipping to live streamers have been penalised and compelled to make corrections.
The livestreaming and short video platforms actively engaged in self-evaluation and self-correction during the special campaign, worked to address the issues, and promoted the informational content of the online livestreaming and short video sector to demonstrate a preliminary improvement.
The running companies of 106 livestreaming and short video platforms that disseminated unlawful information were added to the blacklist of application developers, and the platforms themselves were taken off the market and shut down in compliance with the law.
