为什么值得被收藏？
它是80年代中国绘画艺术中的经典之作
对藏家而言，这样的作品可遇不可求

一件早期藏品：高小华1981年创作的油画《赶火车》，是我在2003年嘉德春拍中竞得的。那场春拍原本安排在4月份，但突如其来的“非典”疫情使拍卖不得不延迟到7月中旬。
拍卖之前，我觉得“非典”不仅会冲击经济运行，也会挫伤藏家购买艺术品的欲望。然而，拍卖结果完全出乎预料。此前，参加嘉德油画拍卖的藏家也就几十人，然而那场拍卖有三百多人到场。
开拍前，我按照估价和以前的行情测算了一下，感觉手中的银两足以拿下五件精品：高小华的《赶火车》、艾轩与何多苓合作的《第三代人》、陈丹青的《西藏组画之一》、吴作人的《战地黄花分外香》、陈逸飞的《人约黄昏》、还有韦尔申的《父与子》。可是，最终我只竞得到《赶火车》和《父与子》。其中，《赶火车》的拍卖价格为363万，是那场拍卖的最高成交价。
拍卖过后，有传言说：《赶火车》不值这么多钱。但我不以为然。因为我知道，《赶火车》是80年代中国绘画艺术中的经典之作。它开创了后文革时代艺术直面现实与人生的理念，被艺术评论界誉为油画的“清明上河图”。对藏家而言，这样的作品可遇不可求。
三条心得
新晋藏家应该如何进行艺术收藏？
收藏家最珍贵的不是拥有作品
而是自己的品位
1993年我开始收藏艺术品，至今已逾27年。通过这些年的收藏经历，我有如下体会：
1. 首先，艺术收藏最大的好处是促使人生变得更加有趣。因此，必须选择自己看得懂而且喜欢的作品。
2. 其次，收藏家最珍贵的不是拥有作品，而是自己的品位。品味不会先天具有，只能通过阅读、观展、交流等途径逐渐积累而成。再次，要挑选在艺术史中占有（或者将会占有）一席之地的艺术家，而且收藏艺术家巅峰时期的精品。
3. 最后，尽量把藏品挂在（或者放在）家中或者办公室。这样不仅能够每天欣赏藏品，并且还可以进行藏品之间的比较。对比藏品有益于提高藏家的鉴赏能力。

In the 2003 Guardian Spring Auction, I bought Catch the Train, which was an oil painting created by Gao Xiaohua in 1981. This auction was originally scheduled for April, but the sudden outbreak of SARS forced it to be postponed until mid-July.
Before the auction, I felt that SARS would not only impact the economy, but also dampen collectors’ desire to buy artworks. However, the auction result came as a complete surprise. Dozens of collectors had participated in previous Guardian oil painting auctions, but this one had more than 300 attendees.
According to the estimates and the way the market had gone in the past, I felt that I had enough money to win five fine works: Gao Xiaohua's Catch the Train, Ai Xuan and He Duoling's The Third Generation, Chen Danqing's Tibetan Paintings Ⅰ, Wu Zuoren's The Yellow Blooms on the Battlefield Smell Sweeter, Chen Yifei's Meeting in Duse, and Wei Ershen's Father and Son.
However, in the end I only got Catch the Train and Father and Son. The auction price of Catch the Train was 3.63 million RMB, which was the highest transaction price in that auction.
After the auction, there were rumors that Catch the Train was not worth so much money. I don’t think so, because I know that Catch the Train is a classic of 1980s Chinese painting. It initiated the concept of art facing the reality and life of the post-Cultural Revolution era, and was praised by art critics as the Along the River During the Qingming Festival of oil painting. For collectors, such a work is rare.
Tips for New Collectors
The most precious thing for collectors is not to own the work, but to own the taste
I started collecting in 1993, and now more than 27 years have passed. These years of collecting have given me the following insights:
1. First, the greatest benefit of an art collection is that it makes life more interesting. Therefore, you must choose works that you can understand and appreciate.
2. Second, the most precious thing for collectors is not to own the work, but to own the taste. Taste is not innate, it can only be gradually accumulated through reading, seeing and communicating. Third, it is necessary to select artists who have (or will have) a place in art history, and collect the works from their best period.
3. Finally, try to hang your collections in your home or office, so that you can enjoy the artworks every day, and also compare them. Comparing a collection is a key part of appreciating it.
