Printmaking is a kind of art with a long history. However, compared with other artistic forms such as sculpture, architecture and fresco, it is a young and modern art. Originating from printing, it existed on different media in its primitive form before the papermaking technology was invented. In the strict sense, however, printmaking appeared after the invention of printing technology and papermaking technology which were the gifts of China to the whole world. Thanks to the two inventions, images could be duplicated on light paper by the thousands. Publishing, an act of having works open to the society and the public, allows visual images to travel around the world. As the earliest global art, printmaking not only allowed people at different regions to share the same images, but also changed the basic ways of people to understand the faith, ideology, politics, war, revolution, life, emotion and art itself, and to view the world.
Printmaking has a longer history in China than it does in the West, but flourished in the whole society amazingly at the same time: about the middle and later periods of the Ming Dynasty in China, and the middle and later periods of the Renaissance in Europe. The reason for such “coincidence” lies in the rapid development of social economy both in the East and in the West. The expanding citizen stratum and their increasing needs for culture caused the consumption of images to soar. Just under such circumstance, the printmaking industry provided products, while the publishing industry provided a channel. Compared with the creation of oil painting and sculpture, the close ties among the drawing, engraving, printing, publishing and sales of prints more comprehensively and more deeply reflected a highly-developed division of labor. Thanks to the collaboration of these links, a new art form was created, which not only met the consumption needs but also reflected the consumption needs. It was of incomparable value for us to study the common society and the public culture.
Focusing on the relationship between printmaking and publishing, this Exhibition will bring visitors the original works of those well-known printmaking masters such as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, William Hogarth, Francisco Goya, Käthe Kollwitz, Joan Miró and Andy Warhol from Europe, Katsushika Hokusai and Keinen Imao from Japan, and Yan Han, Li Qun, Yang Han, Li Shaoyan, Zhu Xuanxian, Li Pingfan and Xu Bing from China. During this Exhibition, we will also show through material object that printmaking is a kind of art with not only the monoprint form just like painting but also a diversity of creation, editing and publishing forms like rubbings, illustrations, album, picture copybook, ink genealogy, letter paper booklet, unlettered novel, picture-story book, Artist’s Book, ex libris, playing card, wine token, book, illustrated magazine and so on. Maybe we have got used to taking printmaking as a unique art medium only, but from the publishing perspective, it has far more diversified and charming looks.
