About Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts （SAFA）
Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, formerly the Shanghai Technical Art School, was established in 1959. It inherited the creative art spirit of the Shanghai College of Fine Arts, founded by Liu Haisu in 1912. Following its 1983 merger with the new Shanghai University, the school name was changed to the Art College of Shanghai University. In December 2016, it was officially renamed Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts (SAFA).
At present SAFA has three National First Class of the doctorial majors (Fine Arts Theory, Design Science, and The Artistic Theory) and one post doctorial moving station (Fine Arts Theory). Now the total students are about 2,400 including 1,700 undergraduate students, 563 graduates and 138 PhD students, and 40 oversea students. SAFA has 153 professional teachers, among them there are 31 professors and 60 associate professors.
This program helps students to develop a solid knowledge and practical ability of architecture, be able to work in architectural design and cultural creativity, educational and scientific research institutions, construction and planning management departments, real estate development and other departments, and engage in architectural design, cultural creativity, education and research, development and management and other related fields.
Core Courses: Preliminary architectural design, architectural design, residential area and planning design, history of Chinese architecture, history of foreign architecture, computer-aided design, architectural structure, principles of public architecture design, architectural structure, principles of urban and rural planning, architectural physics, architectural equipment, principles of residential architecture design, etc.
This program aims to train talents with good humanistic quality, artistic accomplishment, aesthetic ability and professional practice ability. Adapting to the digital era and the development of the information society, students will master the basic theories and knowledge, artistic principles and creation rules of digital media, and be capable of creative design, digital creation, virtual reality, interactive design.
Core Courses: Digital modeling, digital color, image expression, graphic creativity, design fundamentals, sound effects, dynamic video art, interactive technology, dynamic composition, hand-drawn animation, UX design, UI design, infographic design, etc.
The program of Design Science aims to train senior professionals dedicated to the design art. Therefore, students can master in the basic theory of art design and professional skills. They will be provided with the systematic training on public visual communication, urban artistic experience design, architectural artistic design as well as theoretical research.
Main Research Direction: "Shanghai design theory and practice research", "urban construction theory and practice research", "urban creation theory and practice research" and "digital innovation theory and practice research".

●For Arts programs, applicants are required to submit the portfolio.
2) Postgraduate Programs研究生项目
●Non-Chinese citizen in good health with a valid passport;
●Applicants studying for a Master’s degree should have obtained bachelor’s degree;
●Applicants studying for a Doctoral degree should have obtained Master’s degree.
●Students applying to programs of arts must have relative academic background and submit a portfolio.
Note: According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education of China, those who immigrated to other countries from the Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan and applying to study in Shanghai University as international students, should meet the following additional requirements: the applicants must hold valid passport or other relevant international recognized documents for at least 4 years; meanwhile, in the latest 4 years (by each April 30th of the year of University registration), the applicants must have lived overseas for 2 years (Living overseas for 9 months can be converted to 1 year, which is subject to the exit-entry stamp on visa).
1) For Chinese-taught programs, Chinese proficiency has to fulfill one of the following requirements:
●HSK 4 above 180 received within the recent two years;
●Native speaker of Chinese;
●The previous degree is fully taught in Chinese and has gained certificate.
*Note: Applicants who are going to apply for Chinese taught programs in 2021 will be required to achieve HSK 5 above 180.Those who fail to meet the requirement should participate in the International Foundation Program of Shanghai University.

1) Shanghai University Security and Background Check (SBC) for International Students
The purpose of SBC is to check whether the applicant’s personal condition is appropriate to enter the University. It includes questions about the applicant's personal life, education background and physical health. Please answer according to authentic situation and the results will be recorded by university.
2) University Qualification Assessment (UQA) for International Students
The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate whether international students are ready to enter Shanghai University for degree programs and it is only compulsory for individual international applicants of degree programs.
*Chinese proficiency test is only for applicants with Chinese study experience.
3) Telephone interview
The interview language is up to course teaching language and time length is 10-15 minutes.
4) Expert Committee Interview (Postgraduate only)

All applicants of degree programs must pay the tuition deposit RMB 5000 after receiving the E-admission notice within 20 working days. If the payment is not completed after 20 days, it would be regarded as giving up. Those who obtain scholarship after deposit payment can get refund after registration.
