‍Dear Everyone,

We’ve done the first half of our MFA semester, reading and writing nonstop for eight weeks. In the first couple of classes, we’ve focused on the theme of the fantastic and on contemporary fiction while reading plenty of interesting side readings from psychology to Zen.

In the second half, we have two back-to-back classes where we’ll study the classics. The stories and novels we call the classics have passed the test of time, and are, every single one of them, a writing lesson. These lessons sometimes inspire writers so much that they respond to the stories with stories.

In “Hemingway, Joyce, Chekhov,” we will be reading stories by Hemingway, Joyce, and Chekhov paired with their contemporary responses. We’ll turn to the masters to learn the tricks of the trade and pay close attention to the contemporary responses to understand how a writer converses with another, that is to say, how we would do the same.

After focusing on close reading in the first two classes, it’s now time to shift our attention to writing. While you may still take this class as a reading class, I encourage you to take up the challenge to write a story. I invite you to respond to a story that you love with a story that you write.

As the classes are soon to celebrate their fourth birthday, I calculated, with great surprise and pleasure, that I’ve taught more than 50 different classes, where we’ve studied, with great gusto, more than 150 stories and essays. So if you’re not quite sure what story to respond to, please know that I am always here to help and support you in your writing journey.

I sent you a small questionnaire, and you made your voice heard. In accordance with your votes, I am canceling the weekend classes, and moving the April classes to Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some of you signed up before I even announced the classes. Thank you. Your trust in me and my classes means more to me than you can imagine. If you're not signed up yet, come and join us for Hemingway, Joyce, Chekhov in April. We’ll read great stories, which I know will inspire you to write your own!

Not sure if you have the time to write a story? You may take the class as a reading class, and send me your writing when it’s a good time for you!

Notice of Price Increase
Thank you for taking my classes and supporting me for many years. As you may already know, it is a principle of mine to keep the classes affordable since I believe the right to education and practice of art is not reserved for the higher classes. However, the prices of all daily necessities, from water to vegetables, from electricity to rent, have been rising cruelly in Turkey, and it has become impossible to keep the class prices fixed as I’ve tried for the past two years. Therefore, I have but no choice to revise the class fees. Effective June 2023, the class fees will rise, making the 4-week classes 750 RMB. The same change will affect 6- and 8-week classes.
