Dear Alice, Dear Life Short Story and Structure: Letters, Clues, Memories8 PM Thursday, September 5, 12, 19, 26, Oct 10, 176 Weeks/1125 RMB Dear Everyone, Thank you for your response to the Alice Munro poll. Your unanimous answer was, “I am ready to read and study Alice Munro now.” So was mine. And without further ado, we’ll start. The second and last Alice Munro class of the year will begin on Thursday, September 5 after an Open Class next Thursday, August 29. There will not be a class meeting during the National Holiday, October 1-12.
To make up for the fact that I have to start teaching later than I had hoped, I’ll teach an additional story in the Open Class instead of reteaching one from the course. The story I have chosen is Alice Munro’s “Vandals,” which carries what her daughter suffered in real life to the realm of fiction. Therefore, I’d like to add a philosophical question to our discussion of the elements of the story and craft points such as structure, descriptions, and figurative language: How does a writer deal with challenges in her life and art? Alice Munro’s stories are not the shortest of short stories, that’s why I want to share the story with you today. You may scan the QR code below to read it. If you set aside only 15 minutes a day, you’ll finish “Vandals” by the Open Class. And if you can’t find the time to read before joining, I’ll try to help you along as I take you through the story. Open Classes are free and open to all. Do join us and spend an hour and a half with like-minded readers and writers to close-read and learn everything we can from the story and its writer!
*If you’re ready to sign up for the course, don’t wait! Send me a text, and I’ll get you registered. The class will be capped at 12 people. No exceptions. Thank you for your understanding.* Follow The Ways of Black InkFor free writing resources, information and announcements about reading and writing classes, and that random poem.
