Answers forreference:

Lin Yutang was afamous man of letters in modernChina. In his The Art of Reading, he tells us that reading gives a man a certain charm andflavor and only those who read with this object in mind can understand what ismeant by the art of reading. When one begins to think of improving his mind, all the pleasure of reading is gone.

Lin Yutang holdsthat there are nobooks that one absolutely must read. Even if there is a certain book thateveryone must read, there is a given time for it. When one’s thoughts andexperience have not reached a certain point for reading a classic, the book will leave only a badflavor on his palate if he forces himself to read it. He also believes thatalthough there are no books in this world that everybody must read, there arebooks that a person must read at a certain time, in a given place, under givencircumstances, and at a given period of his life.

To him, reading is an act consisting of twosides, the author and the reader. The net gain comes as much from the reader’scontribution through his own insight and experience as from the author’s own. Therefore, Lin Yutang believes that the discovery of a reader’s favorite author is the mostcritical event in his intellectual development.

Sample essay:

The Declining Popularity of Reading

Reading has always been an essentialpart of human civilization. It enlightens us, empowers us with knowledge, andimproves our character and taste. It opens an unknown world to us.

However, there has been anacknowledged global decline of the public interest in reading. Ithink there areseveral causes for this decline. The first is probably the temptation broughtabout by modern technology, seducing people to replace reading withother means of entertainment and relaxation such as computer games, films, TVprogrammes, and online chatting. The second is the social frenzy for money andpower which has drained people of their time and energy, leaving them hardlyany time for reading. The third cause might be the decreasing social awarenessof the importance of reading and, and as a result, less attention is paid toreading.

It is high time that we tookaction to promote reading. Firstly, we should view technological advancements discreetly, and people should be aware that modern means of entertainment can not replace reading.Secondly, the social perception of success must be modified so that peopleshould know that wealth alone does not make a gentleman while reading canimprove one’s character. Thirdly, efforts should be made to enhance public awareness of the importanceof reading. In short, I believe the decline of reading indicates the decline ofa nation and must be addressed.
