The motto “Sell genuine goods at a fair price for all; be equally honest with both children and the aged” has always been the commercial ethics boosted since ancient China. The philosopher Xunzi once said: “If integrity could be upheld by merchants without cheating, then the goods would be transacted smoothly, the market would thrive and the nation would be prosperous.” Ancient confucian scholars also advocated that righteousness should be valued over profits. The wide spread of such philosophy enabled honest trading to be the most fundamental business moral principles in ancient China.

On Honesty
When it comes to honesty, most people believe it is essential to a person’s quality. Many great men in history, such as Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, have set us good examples of being honest. And many successful businessmen also owe much to honesty.
But some people think differently. They believe honesty is becoming out of date. They argue: that, for example, nowadays cheating on exams has become increasingly common; and not a few singers and movie stars cheat on taxes. If you are not careful enough, you are likely to buy defective goods and fake products unconsciously.
However, I insist that we be honest because being honest is not only beneficial to ourselves but also to others and the whole society. The reasons can be listed as follows: firstly, only honest people can be truly respected by others and can make more friends; secondly, honesty, which is the traditional virtue of the Chinese people, can make our life easier and more harmonious; thirdly, honesty can make our society more stable, with a low criminal rate.

Dear Ms. Gale,
Yesterday’s incident where you showed immense integrity and loyalty to the organization has come to my notice, and I would like to appreciate your honesty through this letter. I am not sure that I know of someone who returned $100,000 which was accidentally credited into his or her account. I truly appreciate what you did.
It is the employees like you who give our bank the good reputation that it holds in the country and I must say that I am proud of the way you handled business. Even before this, I have received many commendations for the way you handle clients and work with your colleagues, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your contribution to the organization.
At the end of the week, I am throwing a small celebration to show you how much the company appreciates your honest ways. It would be a pleasure to meet with you and thank you in person. This incident will set the bar high for other employees working at Industrial Bank of Newark, who I anticipate will want to follow your footsteps.
Thank you once again for showing your integrity and escalating the reputation of our organization.
Sincerely,
Norman Plato
CEO of Industrial Bank of Newark
