16世纪罗马天文学家的发现,每年天气最炎热这几个星期,天狼星(Sirius)总与太阳共升共落,而天狼星的别号就是the Dog Star。在拉丁文中人们用代表狗的词根“can”来表示天狼星“canicular”。所以这段酷热期就被称为dies caniculars(天狼星的日子),英语写成了canicular days,民间用了更通俗的说法,就是dog days例句:
