Not long after his arrival in Hong Kong in 1843, the Scottish missionary and scholar James Legge became convinced that “he should not be able to consider himself qualified for the duties of his position until he had mastered the Classical Books of the Chinese, and had investigated for himself the whole field of thought through which the Sages of China had ranged.” We can understand neither ourselves nor one another until we have studied the literature and writings that form the bases of our societies and thought. The importance of language, literature and poetry.

Western culture has two great literary roots – the Classical or Hellenic, with its origins in ancient Greece, and the Hebraic, with its origins in the Semitic societies of the ancient Middle East. The first begins with the two epic poems of Homer, develops in the tragedies of Aeschylus and reaches its flower in the philosophy of Plato. The latter finds its greatest expression in the Hebrew literature of the Bible.

All great literatures have developed canons of supremely important and influential texts. These texts survive the trials of history, and where others fail and are forgotten, remain fresh and important with a synchronic tenacity. What makes for the survival and continuing importance of such texts as The Analects, the Tao Te Ching, the Aeneid of Vergil or, perhaps most ancient of all, the Book of Job? Why should we defend the canons of literature?

Why is Shakespeare at the centre of the Western Canon? This lecture will argue that Shakespeare is a supreme example in literature of originality fused with tradition. Through Shakespeare’s great tragedies, comedies and historical plays we realize more clearly where we come from and what the possibilities for the future might be.

The twentieth century was arguably the most convulsive period in the history of humankind in both Eastern and Western societies. In both cases centuries of tradition and social were ended and much in them was lost and much that was new learned. What role does literature play in such times? Examples will be taken from Russian, South African, American, Chinese and British writers.

Yet remain both connected and divided by language and tradition, literary cultures are threatened by the spread of information through the immediacies of the internet and information technology. Such rapid information is often available at the cost of careful, imaginative and intelligent reflection upon our nature as human beings. Such reflection comes through the study and sharing of literature and of our literary canons, Eastern and Western.
