Will China's Border be More Relaxed for Beijing Winter Olympic?

In the coming 365 days, preparations for the Winter Games will enter the final phase. The Olympic venues will be put into operation gradually, and test activities of various events will be held in accordance with epidemic prevention and control requirements. 

"China has been leading in this [countering COVID-19] effort and has demonstrated in an excellent way how to fight the virus and has made excellent progress, and already has the economy back on track. " International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said. 

"Winter sports athletes from all over the world are also eager to compete in the Winter Olympics. Preparations for the Beijing Olympics are progressing smoothly and are recognized by the international community, including the International Olympic Committee," Wang said. 

"I believe that athletes, sports fans, and media are willing to come to China as the epidemic is under control in China," said Ding. 

Over the next year, the Beijing organizing committee for the Winter Olympics, the IOC and delegations from other countries will work together to come up with a control policy and detailed operational plan that everyone will be satisfied with, Ding said.

"China's hosting of the Winter Olympics is in line with the Olympic spirit. Under the pandemic, many people are worried about whether human beings can unite together. So a successful Olympic Games is collective challenge to the disaster on human beings, and it will inspire people of all nations," Wang Dazhao, a Beijing-based veteran sports commentator, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

China is ramping up efforts to vaccinate 560 million people, or 40 percent of China's population, by the end of June, and another 330 million people will be vaccinated by the end of the year, covering 64 percent of the total population.

Beijing has vaccinated nearly 6 million people with 8.7 million doses against the coronavirus as of March 10, Beijing local authority said, reaching nearly 30 percent of the local population, amid the accelerated national vaccination plan.

The accelerated vaccination campaign is aimed at catching up with the countries leading in vaccination rates as fast as possible to avoid an "immunization gap". 

It is also meant to prevent possible outbreaks in spring and to safeguard a series of upcoming important events such as the Communist Party of China's centenary celebrations in July, international conferences and major sport events such as Asia Youth Games 2021 in November, and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the summary said.
