Top DPRK leader congratulates Putin on re-election as Russian president

Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), has sent a congratulatory message to Vladimir Putin on his re-election as Russian president, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

 

"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to you on your re-election as president of the Russian Federation. Your re-election as president is an expression of your people's great support and trust in you," Kim was quoted by the KCNA as saying in his message sent on Tuesday.

 

"Being convinced that the DPRK-Russia relations of friendship and cooperation with a long history would continue to develop in depth in line with the desire and wishes of the peoples of the two countries, I wish you bigger success in your work to build powerful Russia," he said.

 

Putin was elected president for the fourth time in a landslide victory on Sunday.

Russia's Eastern Military District conducts large-scale air defense exercises

Russia's Eastern Military District (EMD) has started a large-scale air defense exercises, the district's press service said in a statement Wednesday.

 

According to the statement, more than 6,000 servicemen and about 60 planes and helicopters including Su-34, Su-25SM, Su-30SM, Su-35S fighters, Ka-52 assault helicopters, more than 500 units of weapons, and various equipment are involved in the exercises.

 

During the exercise, pilots of fighter aircraft will be engaged in interception and destruction of "intruders." Various aerial and ground weapons will carry out live firing on the targets, added the statement

 

The EMD is one of the four operational strategic commands of the Russian Armed Forces. Headquartered in the Far East city of Khabarovsk, the EMD is in charge of all military affairs in the 4 and Far East region.
