我希望我们的家长都和自己的孩子度过了一个美妙的暑假。学校很多教职工在暑假期间依然十分忙碌,因为我们需要确保所有新教室、科学实验室、艺术教室等等都已准备好迎接新学生的到来。与此同时,我们还进行学校各项设施设备的维护,并开展一系列新的基建项目,包括安装室外泛光照明系统和遮阳棚等,确保这些项目均能按时完工并第一时间投入使用,从而最大限度地减少对学校开学的影响。
除此以外,学校还采购了许多新家具和大批新图书。主楼以及幼儿园图书馆的工作人员会确保在学生返校前将所有新书归类入库。目前我们正在进行为期两周的新员工培训,他们会参加一系列信息量密集的会议和培训课程,为新学期顺利开展教学工作做好充足的准备。当然,我们还做了很多其他工作。
我们的目标是能够尽最大努力确保新学年顺利开学,并在过去两年成功办学经验的基础上为学生提供更加稳定、高质量的惠立教育,竭尽所能,追求卓越。
上周我有幸参加了惠灵顿中国教育集团高层领导团队会议,探讨了对于“卓越文化”的理解。我们彼此分享各自的想法,重新回顾了学校的办学愿景和我们的教育理念。令人欣慰的是,我们作为一个整体,无论是天津、上海,还是我们杭州,都对自己以及他人抱着极高的期待和要求。而经过团队交流,我们都对什么样的学校和教育能被称为“卓越”有了更清晰的认识。
我们认为坦诚地面对不足,并持续不断地追求进步,这对一所学校或是一个教育集团的发展是至关重要的。毕竟我们不可能做到完美,也不应该有这种想法认为我们已经是完美的了。一所好的学校会不断努力改善,并在适当的时候倾听所有利益相关者的意见和想法。一所能被称之为卓越的学校,应当拥有丰富的课程,为学生提供大量提出问题和讨论想法的机会。课程中还应当有机会让学生展现自己独立、积极和慎思的特质。
一所优秀的学校,其核心是高质量的教学。学生所取得的进步和掌握的知识,无论是硬实力还是软技能,都能够充分证明和反映学校的教学质量。一所优秀的学校或教育集团还应当受到所有利益相关者和当地社群的尊重,令他们对学校所做的一切都感到十分自豪。我们知道要达到这个目标非常困难,但我们希望和家长一起努力,确保我们朝着正确的方向进步,最终能够获得所有家长的认可和肯定,对我们而言,这是一个很重要的愿景。
我们也一致认为,学校管理团队对于推动学校向正确方向发展是至关重要的,他们往往是谦逊的,并且愿意给予他人信任和赞赏。我们认为一所优秀的学校应该仔细分析学生学习能力的起点和终点,从而清楚地了解他们到底取得了多大的进步。毕竟只有在完全理解他们进步的基础上,我们才能更好地帮助学生取得更多成就。
我们也需要考虑学生是如何取得进步的,以及多大程度上是受了学校教育的影响。这可能听起来有些矛盾和难以理解,但有一个很好的例子是学生在新冠疫情居家学习期间所取得的进步。这充分反映了家庭支持和学校引导相结合也可以是一种有效的学习方式(当然一个很重要的前提是家校能够一起密切合作,才能确保学生的学习进度不受影响)。最后当我们考虑还有什么其他因素会影响一个学校办学成效时,我们谈到了与他人合作的重要性。毕竟我们的办学愿景就是创建一个充满人文关怀的双语社群,这包括了所有的利益相关者。
我刚才提到的这些,显然我们不可能全部做到,或许我们永远也无法全部做到。但是,意识到这些目标,并开始朝向这些目标努力是发展一个学校很重要的一步。我们即将开启第三学年,因此这些愿景也是我们对所有学生、教职工和家长的承诺。
预祝各位家长和学生周末愉快。校长和各学部校长会继续和您们保持密切沟通。我们期待在即将到来的迎新日见到所有新生和家长们,并在8月24日星期一(惠立幼儿园)和8月26日星期三(惠立学校和惠灵顿外籍人员子女学校)欢迎老生返校。

It is a hugely exciting time here at Wellington College Hangzhou as we near the start date of only our third academic year - which begins on Monday 24th August for Huili Nursery Hangzhou and Wednesday 26th August for Huili School Hangzhouand Wellington College International Hangzhou. A very exciting and yet still challenging time in some ways too, for not only the school but our families also who have had to go through such a difficult period. However - the important point we all focus on here at Wellington College Hangzhou, is that here in China, the pandemic is contained and as such, we maintain our positively and excitement towards the new academic year ahead.
Our aim is for the new year to begin as smoothly as possible and build on the excellence of the last two years and work with a clear sense of normality now that we are able to do this as a school, in order to give our pupils and parents a stable, high quality Wellington/Huili education focusing on excellence in all that we do.
An excellent school is one which has high quality teaching at its heart which can then be evidenced by the progress the children are making and the amount they are learning. Whether this be factual, or skills based. An effective school or school group is one which is held in high regard by a whole range of stakeholders and the local community; who have a sense of pride in all it does. We know that this is so hard to achieve, but the aspiration of working with parents to get to a stage where we all feel we are making the right progress and all parents hold us in high regard is an important aspiration to have. We also agreed that the school leadership that drives the school in the right direction is crucial - but also leadership which is often humble, and which is not loath to give credit to others. We also agreed that an important criteria of an effective school is one which will analyse a pupil's starting and finishing points to see how much value has been added to the progress they have made.
After all, we need to understand that progress and aim to ensure our pupils achieve as much as they possibly can; regardless of starting point. We also reaffirmed the need to consider how pupils have achieved what they have and to what extent this was down to the school. This may sound counterproductive but the progress many pupils made in some areas during the COVID-19 lockdown is an example of where support from home and guidance from school is so effective and where working that closely together (to ensure that important progress was still being maintained) is so important.
And lastly, when considering the characteristics which make an effective school or school group, we talked about the importance of working in collaboration with others. After all, part of our vision is to create a caring community and that includes all the stakeholders within it.
Of all those points just mentioned - naturally we cannot totally achieve them all, and probably never will in their entirety. But to be aware of them as targets and to work towards them as a strong school group is one of the first important steps of any educational establishment. This is our commitment to all of our pupils, staff and parents as we now begin the start of our third academic year.
I wish all our parents and pupils especially, a wonderful weekend. School Principals and Heads will continue their more detailed communication with you over the days and weeks ahead. We look forward to seeing new pupils and parents during the upcoming Orientation Days and all pupils in school from Monday 24th August for Nursery pupils and Wednesday 26th for everyone else.
